One concept that I found very interesting in chapter 13 was graphs! Most people would think that graphs would be a full proof way to see the truth about statistics, but you would be wrong! There are so many ways that you can skew the way that the graphs look and the results that it gives off. For a line graph you can change the steepness of the graph to make things look dramatic or almost nutrural. On a bar graph the creators can make the difference in the bars slight just to show that there is a difference or really dramatic looking to make you think that there is a huge difference. This right here just proves that you need to be critical about everything! You need to look and things and find out what they are really trying to do that with piece if information! I know I used to take graphs at face value but not I take a deeper look at what’s being said!
Oh, Violet. I know this is true. Numbers and especially graphs seem so solid and true - but they aren't.
ReplyDeleteThink about reports on the economy. Most recently, the radio tells us that there was more than a 2% growth in the second quarter. What does that mean? MY economy didn't grow 2%. In fact, with all the prices around me going up, I think it shrunk more than 2%!
Hey! This is a great post! I like math because the answers are the answers! It is either right or wrong. But now in critical thinking, graphs don't give exact answers, they can be misleading and wrong! You did a great job explaining the conept of graphs in general and then going into detail about each kind of graph: lines and bar graphs. You use simple ways of explaining each which do not have elaborate examples so it does not confuse the reader. It definitely helped me! Again, great job on this assignment, simple and comprehensive. Keep up the great work!
ReplyDeleteThe concept of graphs points out major points in the reading; there are many ways to show different graphs for many different possibilities. The vertical part of the graph describes the numbers (such as rates and percentage of the people or subjects) and the horizontal describes the subject (such as who goes to private universities and public universities). The graphs also help distinguish between others to see how each other is doing, whether in accurately maintaining their cash drawer balance or sales goals. I find that this is an interesting way in discussing the situation of graphs and how graphs are used in society as a whole.
